The title of Earl of Hyndford was first created in 1701. It was given to John Carmichael. He was already known as the 2nd Lord Carmichael. John Carmichael was a very important person in Scotland. He served as the Secretary of State from 1696 to 1707. This role meant he helped the government run the country.
At the same time he became an Earl, John Carmichael also received the titles of Lord Carmichael and Viscount of Inglisberry and Nemphlar. These were also Scottish noble titles. His grandfather, James Carmichael, had first received a special honor called a Baronet in 1627. Later, in 1647, James Carmichael was made a Lord Carmichael.
The third Earl of Hyndford was a well-known diplomat. This means he represented Scotland and Great Britain in other countries. The titles of Earl of Hyndford and Lord Carmichael stopped being used after the sixth Earl passed away in 1817. This is called becoming "dormant." Later, some people tried to claim the titles, but they were not successful.
