The Japan Society of the United Kingdom is a group that helps build good friendships between Britain and Japan. It was started in 1891. This group is the oldest one focused on helping a European country and Japan understand each other's cultures and have positive connections. It has also been known as the Japan Society of London, and people often just call it the Japan Society.
History of the Japan Society
The Society began after a big meeting in London on September 9, 1891. This meeting was called the International Congress of Orientalists. At the meeting, people decided to create a group. This new group would help people learn more about Japan. It would also connect everyone in the United Kingdom and around the world who was interested in Japanese topics.
The person who founded the Society was Arthur Diosy (1856-1923). He spoke Japanese very well. He also wrote several books, including one called The New Far East.
Who Can Join the Society?
The Japan Society says it has over 1,000 members. These members include both individuals and companies. Almost half of these members (45 percent) are Japanese.
Joining Forces: Japan 21 Merger
In October 2007, another charity called Japan 21 joined forces with the Japan Society. The Society then started doing Japan 21's educational and community activities. This was in addition to the Society's usual work with businesses, schools, and cultural events.
