Jean Maria O'Brien (born February 2, 1958) is an American historian. She is known for her work on the history of American Indian people, especially those from the northeastern Woodlands region. She has White Earth Band of Ojibwe ancestry.

Her Education and Work

Jean Maria O'Brien earned her Ph.D. degree from the University of Chicago. There, she studied with a well-known anthropologist named Raymond D. Fogelson.

Today, she teaches at the University of Minnesota. She is a professor of History and American Indian Studies. Since 2015, she has been a McKnight Distinguished University Professor. This is a special title given to professors who are excellent at teaching and research.

Jean Maria O'Brien is married to Timothy J. Kehoe. He is an economist, which means he studies how money and resources are used.
