Jesús García (1881–1907) was a brave Mexican railroad worker and a national hero. He is famous for sacrificing his life to save many people from a terrible explosion.

Who Was Jesús García?

Jesús García Corona was born in Hermosillo, Mexico, in 1881. He grew up to become a railroad brakeman. This job meant he helped control the speed of trains, especially when they were going downhill. He worked for the Moctezuma Copper Company in a town called Nacozari.

The Brave Act

On November 7, 1907, a fire started on a train in Nacozari. This train was carrying a very dangerous cargo: dynamite! The fire was getting closer to the dynamite, which could cause a huge explosion. This explosion would destroy the town and hurt or kill many people.

Jesús García quickly realized the danger. Instead of running away, he bravely decided to drive the train out of town. He wanted to get the dynamite far away from homes and people. He started the train and drove it as fast as he could, away from Nacozari.

A True Hero

As the train moved away, the dynamite exploded. Jesús García was killed in the explosion, but his heroic act saved the lives of almost everyone in Nacozari. He chose to risk his own life to protect others.

Because of his incredible bravery, Jesús García is remembered as a national hero in Mexico. The town of Nacozari was even renamed Nacozari de García in his honor. There are statues and monuments dedicated to him, and his story is taught to children as an example of courage and sacrifice.
