Jimeno Garcés of Pamplona facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Jimeno Garcés was a king of Pamplona, a kingdom that is now part of Spain. He ruled from 925 until he died around 932 or 933. Jimeno was also known as Jimeno II. He was the brother of King Sancho I Garcés. Jimeno became king because Sancho's son, García Sánchez, was still a child when his father passed away. Jimeno was an important ruler from the Jiménez dynasty.

Jimeno's Time as King

In 927, King Jimeno led his army south. He went to help a leader named Muhammad ibn Lubb. This leader was fighting against another group called the Banu Tujib. The Banu Tujib were allies with the powerful Emir of Córdoba, Abd-ar-Rahman III. Because Jimeno's army was there, the Emir of Córdoba decided to retreat without fighting.

By 928, Jimeno's nephew, García Sánchez, officially became a joint ruler with him. This meant they ruled together. A document from a old monastery shows that King Jimeno Garcés was ruling with his young nephew García in Pamplona. When Jimeno died in 932 or 933, his nephew García Sánchez I became the sole ruler. García's mother, Toda, helped him rule because he was still young.

Jimeno's Family

Jimeno married a woman named Sancha Aznárez. She was the daughter of Aznar Sánchez and the granddaughter of King Fortún Garcés. Sancha was also the sister of Toda Aznárez, who was King Sancho I's wife. This made Sancha a close relative of Abd-ar-Rahman III.

Jimeno and Sancha had three children:

  • García: He moved to Gascony with his mother.
  • Sancho: He married a woman named Quissilo.
  • Dadildis: She married Muza Aznar.

Jimeno also had another son, also named García, with a different woman. This son died in Córdoba.
