Juan Giné y Partagás (1836–1903) was an important Spanish doctor and writer. He made big contributions to medicine, especially in understanding mental health and skin diseases. He also helped share new scientific ideas with others.

Life Story
Juan Giné y Partagás was born in Pla de Cabra, Tarragona, in 1836. He studied medicine at the University of Barcelona, finishing in 1858. Later, in 1862, he earned his doctorate from the University of Madrid.
Early Career
He started his career as a doctor in the countryside. In 1863, he became an assistant professor at the University of Barcelona's medical school. He then moved to Barcelona. In 1866, he became a professor in Santiago de Compostela.
Professor and Director
During his time at the University of Barcelona, he taught about hygiene starting in 1868. From 1871, he also taught surgical clinic. From 1892 until he passed away, he was the head, or rector, of the University of Barcelona. Besides teaching, Giné y Partagás also directed a special hospital called the Nueva Belén asylum. This hospital helped people with mental health conditions.
New Ideas in Medicine
Juan Giné y Partagás is seen as a pioneer in modern mental health care in Spain. He helped start the first Spanish psychiatry meeting in Barcelona in 1883. Many doctors from Spain and other countries attended this important event. His students and colleagues later formed the first group of mental health experts in Spain.
He was also a leader in the field of skin diseases, known as dermatology. Before him, skin problems were often linked to surgery. He helped make dermatology its own scientific area. His ideas about skin diseases came from French doctors. He wrote about these ideas in a book published in 1880.
Sharing Knowledge
Giné y Partagás played a big role in sharing new scientific information through medical newspapers. He helped create the Barcelona Medical Institute. This was an early attempt to set up a free medical school. He wrote for a publication called The Medical Compiler. He also led the medical newspaper La Independencia Médica starting in 1869. In 1881, he also started the Revista Frenopática Barcelonesa.
