Early Life and Learning

John O'Gorman was born in a place called Ballaghaderreen. At that time, Ballaghaderreen was part of County Mayo in Ireland. John was blind from a young age.

He learned to play the uilleann pipes from a relative named Patrick Vizard. John O'Gorman became very skilled at playing his instrument. His music was so beautiful that it impressed Lady De Freyne. She was the mother of Arthur French, 5th Baron de Freyne. Lady De Freyne bought John a much better set of pipes. This new instrument was far superior to the one he had before.

A Gifted Musician

Captain Francis O'Neill, a famous collector of Irish music, wrote about John O'Gorman. He said that John was respected by everyone. When important events happened, people would send a special car to pick him up. They would also take him home after he finished playing.

John O'Gorman was very generous with his music. He played for anyone who asked him. He loved his instrument deeply, and it seemed to respond to his touch. He was especially good at playing fast, detailed notes.

Competitions and Recognition

John O'Gorman won first prize at a big Irish festival called the Oireachtas in 1902. This award showed how talented he was. Other pipers, George McCarthy and Denis Delaney, won second and third prizes that year.

However, in 1908, John O'Gorman did not win first prize. Denis Delaney won instead. Even so, John O'Gorman remained a celebrated and beloved piper in Ireland.
