Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John Snell (born 1682 – died September 13, 1726) was an important English lawyer and politician. He lived in Gloucester, England. John Snell was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a part of the government, from 1713 until he passed away in 1726.

Early Life and Family

John Snell was the oldest son of Thomas Snell and his wife Bridget. His father, Thomas Snell, was a wealthy man who even served as the Mayor of Gloucester in 1699.

John studied law at a famous place called the Inner Temple starting in 1700. By 1704, he became a qualified lawyer. In 1713, he married Anna Maria Huntingdon. She was the daughter of Robert Huntington, who was a bishop, and the niece of Sir John Powell of Gloucester.

Just two months after his marriage, John Snell inherited a lot of land and property from Sir John Powell. He also bought more land in Gloucestershire, including a place called Lower Guiting.

Political Career

John Snell became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Gloucester in 1713. He was part of the Tory political party. An MP is someone elected to represent their area in the House of Commons.

He was re-elected two more times, in 1715 and 1722. This shows that people in Gloucester trusted him to represent them. In Parliament, John Snell often spoke and voted against the government's plans. This means he was part of the opposition, trying to make sure different ideas were heard.

Later Life and Legacy

John Snell died on September 13, 1726. He was buried in the St. Mary de Crypt Church in Gloucester.

After he passed away, his lands and property went to his oldest son, Powell. John Snell also had a daughter.
