Building Spain's First Personal Computer
Jordi Ustrell was a leader at a company called Eina Informàtica. This company was inspired by the first computer pioneers in California.
In 1979, Jordi Aguilà designed what many consider to be the very first personal computer made in Spain. This exciting project got a lot of attention from magazines and books about computer history. He also created other computer systems for people and businesses.
The Internet Arrives in Spain
Later, Jordi Aguilà became the director of Technology at Banco Sabadell, a bank. From this job, he saw the Internet begin to grow in Spain. He helped with many projects that used the new possibilities of the Internet.
In the early 1990s, before the Internet was widely used in Spain, Jordi Ustrell worked with ISO. This is an organization that helps create international standards. He helped set up rules for how different computer systems could connect and talk to each other. These rules, called OSI standards, are now part of the TCP/IP standards that the Internet uses today.
Spreading the Internet's Power
In the first few years of the Internet, Aguilà helped show everyone how amazing it could be. He led the way in bringing Internet services to Banco Sabadell. This included setting up the first Internet connections, creating the bank's first websites, and starting email services for the company.
He also worked on a project called InfoVía, which was planned to be Spain's own version of the Internet.
Jordi Ustrell then led the team that launched the first fully working Internet banking services in Spain. These services were for both individuals and businesses. They were shown at a big event called Internet World in Madrid in 1996.
He was also in charge of the Virtual Art Gallery Banco Sabadell. This was part of the 1996 Internet World Exposition, which was like the first world fair for the Internet.
He led a project to create an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and email services at Banco Sabadell. This helped more people get online and understand the benefits of the Internet.
Ustrell also joined a group of banks called Efectivo'98. Their goal was to create an Internet home banking program that different banks could use together.
New Ways to Do Business Online
As the Internet became more common, Jordi Ustrell helped create many banking services that worked online. These included ways to pay for things on the Internet, like VISA SET and online payment systems for businesses. Banco Sabadell was one of the first banks in the world to use the VISA SET payment method.
Here are some of the important banking services Jordi Ustrell helped develop:
- Safe Online Shopping: He launched a new system for secure online shopping using a special smart card and digital signatures.
- Banking on the Go: He helped create a way to do banking from mobile phones using WAP.
- New Ways to Work: He helped create the bank's internal network (Intranet) and external network (Extranet) for working together.
- A Bank Just for the Internet: He helped create a new bank called ActivoBank, which was one of the first banks to operate completely online.
- Making Online Business Trustworthy: He worked on big projects with other banks, like Identrus and Consortium Iberion, to make online business safer and more trusted.
Jordi Ustrell also helped other businesses use the Internet. For example, he worked on the Project Firma with the Spanish government. This project helped create rules for using electronic bills and notes, making online business easier and more legal.
Later, when mobile Internet became popular, he worked on projects to plan how banking and payment systems could work on mobile devices. He also worked on a project called High performance workplace.
Because of all these projects, Jordi Ustrell is known as a pioneer of the Internet in Catalonia, Spain. This was even mentioned in a book called Sobirania.cat by Saül Gordillo.
