Jorge Meléndez Ramírez (born April 15, 1871 – died November 22, 1953) was an important politician from El Salvador. He served as the 26th President of El Salvador from March 1, 1919, to March 1, 1923. He was part of a family deeply involved in Salvadoran politics.
Early Life and Family
Jorge Meléndez was born in San Salvador, the capital city of El Salvador. His parents were Rafael Meléndez and Mercedes Ramírez. His mother, Mercedes, was the daughter of Norberto Ramírez, who was also a significant figure in Central American history.
Jorge Meléndez married Tula Mazzini. Together, they had three children. Their names were Jorge (who sadly passed away when he was young), María de los Angeles, and Ricardo. Jorge Meléndez was also the younger brother of another Salvadoran president, Carlos Meléndez. This shows how influential his family was in the country's leadership.
Becoming President
Jorge Meléndez became president of El Salvador on March 1, 1919. He took over the role from Alfonso Quiñónez Molina. His time as president lasted for four years, ending on March 1, 1923. After his term, Alfonso Quiñónez Molina became president again.
