José Ángel Cuerda Montoya, born on March 17, 1934, is a Spanish politician. He is well-known for being the first mayor of Vitoria-Gasteiz who was chosen by the people in a democratic election. He served as mayor for a long time, from 1979 to 1999.

A Leader for Vitoria-Gasteiz

José Ángel Cuerda was a member of the Basque Nationalist Party (EAJ-PNV). As mayor, he was like the main leader of the city. His job was to help Vitoria-Gasteiz grow and make life better for everyone living there. He was mayor for two decades, which is a very long time!

Making Vitoria-Gasteiz a Green City

One of the most important things José Ángel Cuerda did was to make Vitoria-Gasteiz a much greener city. He really cared about the environment. He worked hard to create more green spaces, like parks and gardens, all around the city. He also focused on "sustainable city planning." This means he planned the city in a way that would be good for people and the planet, not just for today but for the future too. His ideas helped Vitoria-Gasteiz become known as a city that cares about nature.

His Approach to Politics

Even though he was part of the Basque Nationalist Party, José Ángel Cuerda had his own way of doing things. He once said that he didn't always follow strict party rules. He believed in working with different groups to do what was best for the city and its people. This shows he was an independent thinker who put the needs of Vitoria-Gasteiz first.
