José Manuel Vela Bargues (born 1962 – died 16 July 2022) was an important Spanish economist and politician. He was from the Valencian Community, a region in Spain. Vela served as the Minister of Finance and Public Administration for the Valencian government. This role lasted from June 2011 until he resigned in November 2012. Vela was a member of the People's Party (PP).

About José Manuel Vela Bargues
José Manuel Vela Bargues was born in Valencia, Spain, in 1962. He went to the University of Valencia. In 1986, he earned a degree in economic and business science. Later, he also received a special doctorate degree in economics from the same university.
His Career in Education
Vela was a professor at the Polytechnic University of Valencia. He taught financial economics and accounting there. He also served as the vice-rector at Jaume I University. A vice-rector is like a senior leader in a university. Since 1991, Vela was a member of the Spanish Association of Accounting and Business Administration. He wrote more than 100 works about economics.
His Role in Government
Before becoming a minister, Vela held several important jobs in the Government of Valencia. He was the director of the Valencian Institute of Statistics. He also worked as the Undersecretary of Budget Policy and Treasury. Later, he became the Autonomous Secretary of Economy and Budgets. These roles helped him gain a lot of experience in managing public money.
Minister of Finance and Public Administration
On June 22, 2011, Francisco Camps, who was the president of the Valencian Community, chose Vela to be the Minister of Finance and Public Administration. When Alberto Fabra became the new president, Vela continued in his role.
As Minister of Finance, Vela had a big job. He had to help Valencia during a tough time called the Great Recession. This was a period when the economy was struggling. To help, Vela oversaw changes like reducing salaries for public workers. He also helped to reorganize how the public sector worked.
His Resignation
In November 2012, there was a public discussion involving Vela. This led to a lot of media attention. Because of this, Vela decided to resign from his position as Minister of Finance on November 30, 2012. Juan Carlos Moragues Ferrer took over his role.
His Passing
José Manuel Vela Bargues passed away on July 16, 2022, at the age of 60. Many politicians from different parties shared their sadness. Leaders like Carlos Mazón from the People's Party and members of the opposing Spanish Socialist Workers' Party offered their condolences. This showed how respected he was across the political world.
