José María Santocildes, a Spanish general

José María Francisco Silvestre Santocildes y de Llanos (born June 29, 1771 – died March 6, 1847) was an important Spanish noble and a top military leader. He served as a field marshal and general during a big war called the Peninsular War.

Early Life and Career

José María Santocildes was born in a city in Spain called Barcelona. We don't know much about his early life, but he became a soldier and rose through the ranks.

Fighting in the Peninsular War

The Peninsular War was a big conflict that took place in Spain and Portugal between 1807 and 1814. It was part of the larger Napoleonic Wars across Europe. During this war, José María Santocildes showed his bravery and leadership.

The Siege of Astorga (1810)

One of his most notable actions was when he commanded the Spanish soldiers defending the city of Astorga in 1810. This was during a long and difficult fight known as the Siege of Astorga. Santocildes was in charge of the Spanish forces trying to hold the city against enemy attacks.

After the War

After the Peninsular War ended in 1814, Santocildes continued his military career. He was given a very important job: he became the Chief of the General Staff of the Army. This meant he was a key advisor and organizer for the entire Spanish army.

José María Santocildes passed away in his hometown of Barcelona in 1847.
