José Zepeda was an important leader in Nicaragua. He was a colonel and a politician. He served as the Head of State of Nicaragua from 1835 until he died in 1837. He was born in 1784 and passed away on January 24, 1837, in León, Nicaragua.

Military Service
José Zepeda was a brave soldier. He became a Colonel in the army led by General Francisco Morazán. He fought in several important battles. These included the Battle of La Trinidad in 1827 and the Battle of El Gualcho in 1828. He also took part in the Battle of Las Charcas in 1829.
Leading Nicaragua
On February 21, 1835, the government chose José Zepeda to be the Head of State. He officially started his job on April 23, 1835. His Vice Chief was José Núñez.
Important Changes
José Zepeda's time as leader was very positive for Nicaragua. He made many important changes.
- He set up a jury system for trials.
- He created the Court of Accounts to manage government money.
- He made rules for criminal trials.
- He also created a good Penal Code, which is a set of laws.
- He organized the Supreme Court of Justice.
- He made it illegal to use firearms.
Education and Learning
Zepeda cared a lot about education. He wanted people to be well-educated.
- He said that religious leaders needed to finish university studies.
- He reopened the universities in León and Granada.
- He set rules for teaching in all subjects.
- He also opened many new schools.
Besides these changes, he started an official newspaper. It was called El Telégrafo Nicaragüense. The town of Rivas was also given the special title of a city during his leadership.
His Final Days
José Zepeda's time as Head of State ended sadly. On January 25, 1837, some people stormed the barracks in León. They took a man named Braulio Mendiola from jail. This group then went to arrest Zepeda and some other officials.
José Zepeda and Colonel Román Valladares were killed. They were later buried in the Cemetery of Guadalupe. After Zepeda's death, Vice Chief Núñez took over as the leader. He finished the rest of Zepeda's term. Braulio Mendiola was caught and punished for the killings.
