Juan José Pedro de la Carrera y Verdugo (born June 26, 1782, in Santiago, Chile – died April 8, 1818, in Mendoza, Argentina) was a Chilean soldier and a key figure in his country's fight for independence. He was a strong supporter of his brother, José Miguel Carrera. Together with his younger brother Luis and other officers, Juan José was part of a group called the Carrerinos. This group was one of the main teams fighting for Chile to become independent from Spain. Juan José Carrera was executed in Mendoza along with his brother Luis by the local authorities.

Early Life and Role in Independence

Juan José Carrera was born in Santiago, which was then part of the Spanish colony known as the Captaincy General of Chile. He grew up during a time when many people in South America wanted to be free from Spanish rule. He became a soldier and joined the fight for Chile's independence.

This early period of the Chilean War of Independence is often called the "Old Homeland" (Patria Vieja). Juan José played an active role in these important years, helping to shape Chile's future.

Key Moments in Public Service

Juan José Carrera was involved in several important events during the fight for independence. His actions showed his dedication to the cause.

Serving on the Board of Governors

In March 1813, his brother José Miguel was away. During this time, Juan José was chosen to be a member of the Board of Governors. This group was in charge of leading the country.

Military Leadership and Battles

Also in 1813, Juan José Carrera held the rank of brigadier, a high military position. He took part in some of the first major battles of the independence war. These included the Siege of Chillán and the Battle of San Carlos. These battles were important steps in the fight for freedom.

Exile and Return

In late 1814, Juan José was sent away to Mendoza, Argentina. This was ordered by Francisco de la Lastra, who was then the Supreme Director of Chile. While in Mendoza, he did not get along with the local governor, José de San Martín.

Later that year, Juan José returned to Chile. He was part of a new change in leadership on July 23. This change removed De la Lastra from power and briefly put José Miguel Carrera back in charge.

Leading the Patriot Army

By the end of September 1814, Juan José took command of the Second Division of the patriot army. Their mission was to stop the royalist forces, led by Mariano Osorio, from reaching the capital city. The royalists were soldiers loyal to the King of Spain.

This was a very difficult and uncertain task. Just before taking on this important role, Juan José Carrera married Ana María Cotapos.
