Juan Manuel Galán Pachón (born 29 July 1972) is a Colombian politician. He has served as a Senator of Colombia since 2006. Juan Manuel is the son of Luis Carlos Galán Sarmiento, a well-known politician and presidential candidate who passed away when Juan Manuel was young.

Juan Manuel Galán was once a member of the Liberal Party. In 2021, he helped restart his father's political party, called New Liberalism.

Juan Manuel Galán's Career Journey

Juan Manuel Galán finished high school in Bogotá in 1989. After his family moved to France, he studied political science in Paris. He earned a degree in International Affairs in 1996 and a master's degree in International Affairs in 1997. His master's thesis was about a new way of doing politics in Colombia. Later, in 2003, he earned another master's degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

In 1997, Juan Manuel returned to Colombia. He began his political career, following in his father's footsteps. He supported different political candidates and worked to make a name for himself.

In 1998, he became the youth director for the presidential campaign of Andrés Pastrana Arango. When Pastrana won the election, he appointed Galán as the Deputy Director for Youth at the Ministry of National Education. This role allowed him to work on important projects for young people in Colombia.

In 2004, President Álvaro Uribe Vélez appointed Juan Manuel Galán to work at the Colombian Embassy in London. He served there as a special envoy until August 2005. He then returned to Colombia to run for a seat in the Senate.

Serving as a Senator

Juan Manuel Galán first ran for the Senate in the 2006 elections. He was part of the Liberal Party's list of candidates. He received many votes and was elected as a Senator. During this time, he worked on the Senate's Second Commission, which focuses on foreign affairs and national defense.

He ran for Senate again in 2010 and was re-elected. This time, he was at the top of the Liberal Party's list of candidates. He continued to receive strong support from voters.

Currently, he is a member of the Senate's First Commission. This commission deals with important laws and internal affairs of the country.

Supporting LGBT Rights

In 2013, Juan Manuel Galán voted to support the recognition of same-sex unions in Colombia. He voted in favor of this in both the Senate's First Commission and on the main floor of the Senate. He believed that same-sex couples should have the right to marry, just like other couples.

Juan Manuel Galán's Family Life

Juan Manuel Galán was born in Bogotá. His parents were Luis Carlos Galán Sarmiento and Gloria Pachón Castro. He is the oldest of three brothers. His younger brothers are Claudio Mario and Carlos Fernando.

Juan Manuel's maternal aunt, Maruja, was kidnapped a year after his father passed away. This event was part of a larger effort to pressure the government to stop an agreement with the United States that his father had supported.
