Juan de la Abadia - Saint Sebastian
San Sebastián, a painting by Juan de la Abadía el Viejo.

Juan de la Abadía el Viejo was a Spanish painter who lived in the late 1400s. He was known for his beautiful paintings made in a style called Gothic Spanish-Flemish. This style combined the detailed look of Flemish art with the traditional Gothic art of Spain.

Juan de la Abadía el Viejo was active from about 1470 to 1498, which is also thought to be the year he passed away. His son, Juan de la Abadía el Joven, also became a painter and worked alongside his father after 1490.

Who Was Juan de la Abadía el Viejo?

Juan de la Abadía el Viejo was a talented artist from Spain. He created many religious paintings during a time when art was often used to tell stories from the Bible and show important figures of faith. His work is a great example of the art popular in Spain during the 15th century.

For a long time, people knew his work but didn't know his real name. They called him the Maestro de Almudévar (which means "Master of Almudévar"). This was because one of his famous paintings, Santo Domingo, was found in the town of Almudévar in Huesca, Spain. Later, an art historian named Ricardo del Arco discovered his true identity.

What Are His Famous Works?

Juan de la Abadía el Viejo created several important artworks. Here are some of them:

  • Santa Catalina (painted around 1490): This painting was once in the church of la Magdalena de Huesca. Sadly, this artwork is now lost.
  • The Saviour: This painting was originally from the hermitage of Broto. A hermitage is a small chapel or dwelling, often in a quiet place. Today, you can see The Saviour at the Museum of Zaragoza.
  • Santo Domingo: This painting is located in Almudévar, Huesca. It was this painting that helped identify him as the "Maestro de Almudévar" before his real name was known.

These paintings show his skill in the Gothic Spanish-Flemish style. They often feature detailed figures and rich colors, typical of the art from that period.
