This article explains how judo athletes can qualify to compete in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. A total of 372 judokas will participate. Each country (called an NOC, which stands for National Olympic Committee) can send a maximum of 14 judokas, with 7 men and 7 women, each in a different weight category.

France, as the host country, automatically gets a spot in all 14 individual judo events. Also, 15 special spots are given to countries through "universality quotas." These are for countries that might not have many athletes but deserve a chance to compete.

The main way for judokas to earn a spot is through their performance in competitions around the world. The International Judo Federation (IJF) keeps a special list called the world ranking list. Athletes earn points based on how well they do in different tournaments. The qualification period started on June 24, 2022, and ended two years later, on June 23, 2024. The final list of qualified athletes was published shortly after.

How Athletes Qualify for the Olympics

Direct Qualification from World Rankings

The top 17 judokas in each weight category on the IJF World Ranking List get a direct spot in the Olympics. However, there's a rule: each country can only send one judoka per weight category. So, if a country has more than one athlete in the top 17 for the same weight class, that country must choose which athlete will take the spot.

Continental Spots

Besides the top 17, extra spots are available for athletes from different continents. These are called "continental quotas."

  • Europe gets 13 spots for men and 12 for women.
  • Africa gets 12 spots for men and 12 for women.
  • The Americas get 10 spots for men and 11 for women.
  • Asia gets 10 spots for men and 10 for women.
  • Oceania gets 5 spots for men and 5 for women.

The IJF looks at the world ranking points of all judokas from each continent. The athletes with the highest points who haven't already qualified directly will get these continental spots for their country. Just like with direct qualification, each country can only get one judoka through the continental rules.

Mixed Team Event Spots

The Olympics also features a mixed-team judo tournament. Five special invitation spots are given for this event, one for each continent. These spots go to the highest-ranked countries that have qualified judokas in only five out of the six weight classes needed for the mixed team. The best-ranked judoka from these countries will then fill the last spot to complete their team.

Refugee Olympic Team

The International Olympic Committee also invited 6 athletes (3 men and 3 women) to join the Refugee Olympic Team. These athletes will also take part in the mixed-team tournament.
