Kʼukʼ Bahlam I, also known as Kuk or Bahlum Kʼukʼ, was a very important ruler of the ancient Maya city of Palenque. He is known as the founder of the ruling family, or dynasty, of Palenque. He began his rule on March 10, 431 AD, and reigned until about 435 AD. Kʼukʼ Bahlam I was born on March 30, 397 AD. In the Maya language, an ajaw means a lord or king.

The First King of Palenque

Kʼukʼ Bahlam I was the first known king of Palenque. He started a new line of rulers for the city. This means that after him, his family members would become the next kings.

Founding a Dynasty

The word "dynasty" means a series of rulers from the same family. Kʼukʼ Bahlam I established this system in Palenque. This was a common way for powerful cities to be governed in ancient times. His rule helped to shape the future of Palenque.
