Kari Skjønsberg's Life and Work
Kari Skjønsberg was born in Oslo, Norway. She had a very interesting career helping children and women.
Early Career and Radio Work
In the 1940s, Kari worked on a fun radio show for kids. It was called Lørdagsbarnetimen, which means "Saturday Children's Hour". This show was on NRK radio, a big broadcasting company in Norway.
Later, in the 1950s, she became a literary critic. This means she wrote reviews about books for newspapers like Arbeiderbladet and Verdens Gang. She helped people decide what to read.
Studying Children's Stories
Kari Skjønsberg loved children's books. In 1953, she earned a special degree. Her main project was about how Norwegian children's stories grew and changed over time. She became an expert in this field.
From 1968 to 1994, she taught about children's books at a college in Oslo. This college is now called Oslo and Akershus University College. She helped many students learn about the importance of children's literature. She also wrote several books herself about this topic.
Working for Women's Rights
Kari Skjønsberg was also a strong supporter of women's rights. From 1972 to 1978, she was the president of the Norwegian Association for Women's Rights. This group works to make sure women have equal opportunities and rights.
The Kari Skjønsberg Prize
To honor her important work, a special award was created in 1996. It is called the Kari Skjønsberg Prize (Kari Skjønsberg-prisen). This prize helps encourage new research about books for children and young people. It is given out every year by the college where she used to teach.
Kari Skjønsberg passed away in 2003. She was buried in Vestre gravlund in Oslo.
