Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Kashō is a name used for two different periods of time in Japanese history. These periods are called 'era names' or nengō in Japan. Era names are like special names given to years, often linked to the reign of an emperor.

What is a Japanese Era Name?

In Japan, an era name, or nengō, is a way to count years. It's different from how most of the world uses the common calendar (like 2024). Instead, a new era name often starts when a new emperor begins his rule, or sometimes because of a big event.

Kashō (Early Heian Period)

One period named Kashō happened during the early Heian period. This era lasted from 848 to 851. The Heian period was a very important time in Japanese history, known for its rich culture and art.

Kashō (Late Heian Period)

Another period also called Kashō took place much later, during the late Heian period. This second Kashō era was shorter, lasting from 1106 to 1108.
