Early Life and School
La'Ron Singletary grew up in a neighborhood called the 19th Ward in Rochester, New York. From a young age, he knew he wanted to become a police officer. When he was 14, he joined a program called Police Explorer. This program helps young people learn about law enforcement.
After finishing high school at John Marshall, he continued his education. He attended Monroe Community College and then graduated from Keuka College. He later earned a special degree called a Master of Public Administration from SUNY Brockport. This degree helps people learn how to manage public services.
Time with Rochester Police
Singletary joined the Rochester police force in the year 2000. He was officially sworn in by Robert Duffy, who was a well-known figure in the city. He worked his way up through the ranks. In January 2018, he became the deputy chief of the department. Just over a year later, in July 2019, he was promoted to chief of police. This was a very important leadership role.
Resignation as Chief
While Singletary was police chief, a sad event happened in 2020. A person named Daniel Prude died while in police care. This incident received a lot of attention across the country. After this, there was public pressure and an investigation. The investigation looked into how the city's mayor and Singletary handled information about the case.
Following these events, Singletary and other police leaders resigned. Later, a group of citizens called a jury decided not to charge any of the officers involved. In December 2020, Singletary said that the mayor had pressured him to change his story about what happened. He also said she fired him when he refused. The mayor, however, said that Singletary had not fully explained the situation around Prude's death. Singletary later won a lawsuit against the city. This lawsuit helped him get medical benefits that were promised to employees who worked for the department for over 20 years.
Political Journey
Before 2021, La'Ron Singletary was a member of the Democratic Party. In 2021, he decided to join the Republican Party.
