The Magazine's Beginning
Why Was It Started?
The Ladies' Magazine was founded by a man named John Lauris Blake. He was a minister and also ran a school for young ladies. Reverend Blake wanted the magazine to help shape what it meant to be an American woman. He hoped it would offer good examples and ideas for women of that time.
The First Female Editor
What made the Ladies' Magazine really special was its editor, Sarah Josepha Hale. From 1828 to 1836, she was in charge of the magazine. Many people believe she was the first woman to ever edit a magazine in America!
Sarah Josepha Hale had a big dream for the magazine. She wanted to help educate women. She believed that by learning more, women could help improve the minds and character of everyone around them. She wrote that women should use their knowledge to help others in their lives.
A New Chapter: Merging with Godey's Lady's Book
In 1836, a publisher named Louis Antoine Godey bought the Ladies' Magazine. The very next year, in 1837, something big happened. The Ladies' Magazine joined forces with another popular magazine called the Lady's Book and Magazine. This other magazine was published in Philadelphia and later became very famous as Godey's Lady's Book.
After the merger, Sarah Josepha Hale moved from Boston to Philadelphia. She continued her important work as the editor of the new, combined magazine. This new magazine became one of the most widely read publications in America for many years.
