Early Life

Growing Up in Ireland

Lisa O'Neill grew up in a place called Ballyhaise in County Cavan, Ireland.

Career

Starting Her Music Journey

When Lisa was 18, she moved to Dublin to study music. She attended Ballyfermot College to learn more about her passion. For seven years, she worked in different jobs while still writing songs.

Her very first album, Has An Album, came out in 2009. A few years later, in 2011, famous musician David Gray asked her to perform before his concerts. She joined him on his tours in America and Canada. Lisa was also part of his band for a while.

Awards and Recognition

Lisa's albums from 2013 and 2018 were nominated for the Choice Music Prize. This is a big award for music in Ireland. In 2016, she performed at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival.

In 2016, Lisa also appeared on an album by the group Yorkston/Thorne/Khan. The group thought about adding her name to theirs, but Lisa preferred to be a special guest.

Music in Film and TV

In 2017, Lisa was featured in a film called Song of Granite. In the movie, she sang a song called "The Galway Shawl". That same year, she was part of a YouTube series called "This Ain't No Disco." She sang her song "Factory Girl" with Radie Peat from the band Lankum.

Lisa won an award in 2019 for "Best Original Folk Track." This was for her song "Rock the Machine" from her album Heard a Long Gone Song. She was also nominated for several awards at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

In 2021, many people heard Lisa's music when her cover of Bob Dylan's "All the Tired Horses" was used in the TV show Peaky Blinders. Her deep voice made the song very popular.

Recent Performances

In December 2023, Lisa performed at the funeral service for musician Shane MacGowan. She sang "Fairytale of New York" with the Pogues and Glen Hansard. They sang the parts originally performed by Kirsty MacColl and Shane MacGowan.
