Lists of schools in England facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

In England, schools are set up and managed by groups called local education authorities (LEAs). Think of an LEA as a local government team that helps run the schools in its area. There are 150 of these LEAs across England, and they are grouped into nine larger regions.

In 2017, there were 3,408 government-funded secondary schools in England. More recent numbers from 2019 show there are about 30,000 schools in total. This includes around 25,000 primary schools for younger children and 3,448 secondary schools for older students. There are also 2,319 independent schools (which are private schools), 1,044 special schools for students with specific needs, and 352 pupil referral units, which are places for students who might not be able to attend a regular school for a while.

Many schools are now part of multi-academy trusts (MATs). These are groups that manage two or more schools, helping them work together. In 2019, there were 1,170 MATs. Most of them (598) managed five schools or fewer, while a smaller number (29) managed 26 or more schools.
