Louis-André-Joseph de Lombard was born into an important family in Bordeaux, France. From a young age, he was interested in the sea. He joined the French Navy on September 17, 1751, as a Garde-Marine. This was a special rank for young officers learning to command ships.
He worked hard and moved up through the ranks. On October 1, 1764, he became a Lieutenant. This meant he was a more experienced officer, ready for bigger responsibilities.
Commanding Ships
Lombard soon began to command his own ships. In 1770, he took charge of a 14-gun ship called the Barbue. This ship was a type of cargo vessel often used by navies. The Barbue sadly ran into trouble and was wrecked in December 1771 near Penmarch.
After that, in 1773, Lombard commanded the 16-gun corvette Perle. A corvette is a smaller, fast warship. He continued to gain experience. By April 4, 1777, his skills were recognized, and he was promoted to Captain. This was a very important rank in the navy.
Fighting in the American Revolution
In 1779, Captain Lombard commanded the frigate Terpsichore. A frigate is a medium-sized warship, known for its speed. He sailed her around important French islands and ports.
Later, he was given an even bigger command: the 64-gun ship of the line Provence. This was a powerful warship with many cannons. Lombard commanded the Provence during the Battle of Cape Henry on March 16, 1781. This battle was a key naval fight during the American Revolutionary War.
Honors and Recognition
For his brave service, Louis-André-Joseph de Lombard received special honors. He was made a Knight in the Order of Saint Louis. This was a very respected award for French military officers. He also became a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, an organization for officers who fought in the American Revolutionary War.
