The banded barbet (Lybius undatus) is a type of bird that belongs to the Lybiidae family. You can find this bird in the countries of Eritrea and Ethiopia.

This interesting bird lives across Ethiopia, from lowlands (around 300 meters) to high mountains (up to 2400 meters). While we don't know exactly how many there are, they can be found alone or in pairs near water, often in trees. Sometimes they are uncommon, but in other places, they are quite common.

About the Banded Barbet

The banded barbet is a stocky bird, meaning it looks quite solid and strong. It has a large head and a heavy beak. This bird is about 20 to 25 centimeters (8 to 10 inches) long.

What Does it Eat?

Banded barbets enjoy eating both insects and fruits. They have been seen eating beetles and the fruit from fig trees. Sometimes, they even catch insects in the air, just like a flycatcher bird does! They have also been seen hanging upside down from branches, similar to how a tit bird might.

Sounds and Calls

The banded barbet makes metallic-sounding calls. It also produces a special sound that goes "gr-gr-grgrgr..." This call starts slowly and then gets faster and faster.

Nesting and Babies

When it's time to have babies, the banded barbet builds its nest in a hole. This hole can be in a tree branch, inside a tree trunk, or even in a tree stump.

Female barbets usually lay about two to four eggs. These eggs hatch after about 13 to 15 days. Both the mother and father barbet work together to take care of their eggs and young birds.
