Máel Snechtai mac Lulaich (died 1085) was an important ruler in a part of Scotland called Moray. He was the son of Lulach, who was briefly King of Scotland. Máel Snechtai ruled Moray from 1058 until his death in 1085.
Máel Snechtai: A Ruler of Moray
Máel Snechtai is known for being called "King of Moray" when he died. This was a new and important title. Before him, rulers of Moray were often called "King of Scotland" or "Mormaer" (a type of powerful local lord). Being called "King of Moray" showed that Moray was becoming a more distinct and important kingdom.
Conflict with King Máel Coluim III
Máel Snechtai was the son of a former King of Scotland, Lulach. Because of this, he likely believed he had a strong claim to be the rightful King of Scotland himself. This led to a conflict with the ruling King, Máel Coluim III.
In 1078, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle reported on this struggle. It said that King Máel Coluim III attacked Máel Snechtai. Máel Coluim managed to capture Máel Snechtai's mother and take all his treasures and cattle. Máel Snechtai himself barely escaped. This event shows that there was a serious fight for power between them.
His Death
Máel Snechtai died in 1085. This date is recorded in the Annals of Ulster, which were historical records kept in Ireland. Even after his defeat by Máel Coluim III, he was still known as the "King of Moray" when he died.
