Mónica's Career Journey
Mónica was born in Dakhla, Western Sahara. Her father was in the military there. Even though she only lived there for a short time, it helped her discover her love for nature.
She studied Biological Sciences at the Complutense University of Madrid. She finished her degree in 1991. After that, she started working in a laboratory. But after a trip to Alaska, she decided to change her path. She wanted to focus on sharing her knowledge about nature.
Sharing Nature Stories
Mónica began writing articles for the newspaper ABC in 1997. Later, in 2010, she also wrote for the online news site Republica.com
.In 2007, she created her own website. On this site, she started the Diccionario Aceytuno de la Naturaleza. This was a special dictionary about nature. Readers helped her create it. The Aquae Foundation also supported this project.
In 2015, Mónica started making videos. She also created short documentaries for different media. In her work, she often mixes nature facts with poetry. She also gave talks about a poetry book. It was a book of haiku poems written by her brother, Juan Fernández-Aceytuno.
Awards and Special Recognitions
Mónica has received several awards for her work. These awards celebrate her efforts to teach people about nature.
In 2003, she won the Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente de Conservación de la Naturaleza National Environmental Award. This was for her great work in science outreach. In 2007, she received the Jaime de Foxá Literary Prize. This award came from the Real Club de Monteros.
One year later, in 2008, she got another honor. She received the Medal of Honor for Professional Merit. This was from the College of Forestry Engineers. They recognized her work in newspapers and online. In 2016, she won the Outreach Communication award. This was from the International Environmental Film Festival of the Canary Islands.

Mónica Fernández-Aceytuno has written several books. She also works on a special dictionary.
- El viento en las hamacas (The Wind in the Hammocks), published in 2004.
- Diccionario Aceytuno de la Naturaleza (Aceytuno's Nature Dictionary). This is a project she is still working on with her readers.
- El país de los pájaros que duermen en el aire (The Land of Birds That Sleep in the Air), published in 2018.
