Maps of castles in England by county: L–W facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Castles are amazing old buildings that tell us a lot about history! They were built a long time ago, often by kings, queens, or powerful lords, to protect their lands and people. These strong buildings were usually made of stone and had tall walls, towers, and sometimes even a moat (a ditch filled with water) around them. People lived and worked inside castles, and they were very important for defending against enemies.

This page shows you where many castles are located across different counties in England. You can click on the red or green dots on the maps to see exactly where each castle is.

  • Green dots usually mean that a lot of the castle is still standing today. You might even be able to visit them!
  • Red dots mean that only a little bit of the castle is left, like some old earthworks (mounds of earth) or just small pieces of the original building. Sometimes, there's nothing visible at all.
