Early Life and Beginnings

Exploring New Lands

Farfán de los Godos was sent on expeditions by Juan de Oñate. Oñate was a Spanish leader who wanted to explore lands north of present-day Mexico. Farfán's main job was to find new territories and look for valuable mines.

In 1598, Farfán de los Godos traveled to the area we now call Arizona. During his journey, he met the Hopi people, who are Native Americans living in that region.

He also found places where there might be mines. He claimed these areas for Spain, especially near what is now Jerome, Arizona. These claims were important for Spain's search for gold and other valuable minerals.
