Marie of Ponthieu was an important noblewoman who lived a long time ago. She was born on April 17, 1199, and passed away on September 21, 1250. Marie was special because she ruled her own lands, the County of Ponthieu and Montreuil. She was in charge from 1221 until her death in 1250.
About Marie's Life
Marie was the daughter of William IV of Ponthieu and Alys, Countess of the Vexin. Her grandmother was Constance of Castile, who was married to King Louis VII of France. Marie was the only one of her father's children who lived to become an adult. Because of this, she became the ruler of Ponthieu and Montreuil after her father passed away. She held this important position from 1221 to 1250.
Marie's Marriages and Children
Marie married Simon of Dammartin before September 1208. Simon's parents were Alberic II of Dammartin and Maud de Clermont. Simon and Marie had four daughters. We know about two of them.
Their older daughter was Joan of Dammartin (born around 1220, died March 16, 1279). Joan later became the second wife of Ferdinand III of Castile, who was a king.
Their younger daughter was Philippe of Dammartin (died between 1277 and 1281). Philippe married three times. Her first husband was Raoul II d' Issoudun. Her second husband was Raoul II de Coucy. Her third husband was Otto II, Count Geldern.
Marie married a second time between September 1240 and December 1241. Her second husband was Mathieu de Montmorency, who was a lord from Attichy. Mathieu was a soldier and was killed in a battle at Mansurrah on February 8, 1250. This battle happened during the Seventh Crusade, which was led by King Louis IX of France.
