Markku Häkkinen (born January 14, 1946 – died December 5, 2015) was a Finnish botanist. A botanist is a scientist who studies plants. Markku Häkkinen taught himself about plants. He became one of the world's top experts on how to classify different types of bananas. This is called the taxonomy of bananas.
Häkkinen discovered and described 46 out of the 70 known types of wild bananas. This means he was the first to officially name and explain these banana species to the scientific world. For his amazing work, the Linnean Society of London gave him the H. H. Bloomer Award in 2009. This is a very important award for people who study nature. In 2015, he also received an award from the Finnish Cultural Foundation for his great achievements in culture and science.
From Sea Captain to Botanist
Markku Häkkinen first worked as a sea captain. He traveled all over the world. During his travels, he became very interested in plants. After he stopped working as a captain, he spent all his time studying botany.
Exploring the World for Bananas
Häkkinen went on 18 expeditions to different countries. These included Borneo, Brunei, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. He traveled to these places to find and study wild bananas. He wrote more than 80 scientific papers about his discoveries. These papers were published in international science journals.

Because of his important work, several banana species were named in his honor. These include:

- Musa velutina subsp. markkuana
