Mastère Spécialisé facts for kids
A Mastère Spécialisé (MS) is a special French university degree. You can also call it a Specialized Master or Advanced Master. It was created in France in 1986.
To get this degree, you first need to finish a regular Master's degree. After that, you continue your studies at a special French school called a Grande école. This extra study focuses on a very specific subject. Students who earn a Mastère Spécialisé are seen as having deeper knowledge in their chosen field compared to those with only a Master's degree.
The course usually takes one year to complete. This year includes at least four months of practical work experience, like an internship.
Why the Mastère Spécialisé Was Created
The idea for the Mastère Spécialisé started in 1986. Back then, a group called the Commission des titres d'ingénieur said that students needed to study for two years in a school to get a French Master's degree.
However, many students from other countries would come to French schools for only one year. They would then go back home without getting a degree. Also, the system for counting university credits, called the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System, was not yet used by all schools.
At the same time, companies in France were looking for graduates with very specific skills. They needed people for important jobs in key industries.
Because of these two reasons, a French organization called the Conférence des Grandes Écoles decided to create the Mastère Spécialisé. It helped foreign students get a recognized degree after one year. It also helped French companies find people with the exact skills they needed.
