Matiguás is a town and a municipality in the Matagalpa department of Nicaragua. It is like a "twin city" to Saarlouis in Germany, meaning they have a special friendly connection. Matiguás is about 249 kilometers from Managua, which is the capital city of Nicaragua. It is also 75 kilometers from Matagalpa City.
Matiguás became a town in 1920. Later, in 1999, it was officially recognized as a city. It is the biggest municipality in its department. Matiguás is also one of the top places in Nicaragua for producing milk, along with other areas like Muy Muy, Río Blanco, and Paiwas.
In the Sumo language, the name "Matiguás" means "water mouse."
