Maxim's Caterers Limited is a large food and restaurant company based in Hong Kong. It is owned by two companies: Dairy Farm International Holdings Limited and Hong Kong Caterers Ltd.
Founded in 1956, Maxim's now runs over 1,000 places. These include bakeries, fast food shops, and restaurants in Hong Kong, China, Cambodia, and Vietnam. They also have licenses for Starbucks coffee shops.
History of Maxim's
Maxim's was started by two brothers, James Wu and S.T. Wu, along with a few other people. Their very first restaurant opened on December 3, 1956. It was located in the basement of Telephone House in Central, Hong Kong.
At first, Maxim's was a fancy "first-class restaurant and night-club." But in the 1960s, more international hotels opened. This made Maxim's change its focus. They started to offer more morning tea, lunch, and snacks instead.
In October 1972, a new company called Maxim's Caterers Limited was created. This company took over the Maxim's and Jade Garden restaurant brands. By early 1973, the group had grown to operate 15 restaurants.
S.T. Wu, who was the managing director for a long time, stepped down in 2000. His grandson, Michael Wu Wei-kuo, took over his role. Michael was 29 years old at the time and had worked as the company's chief financial officer before.
Maxim's Brands
In 1998, Maxim's started a new group of restaurants called m.a.x. concepts. This group included different types of restaurants. Some examples are MAX, Cellini, Mecca, Thai Basil, eating plus, and café Landmark. They also had modern restaurants like Kiku and Miso.
In 2004, the company opened a chain of French-Vietnamese restaurants called Rice Paper. In the same year, Maxim's Fast Food started making ready-to-eat meals and snacks. These were sold in supermarkets like 7–11 and Wellcome.
Maxim's bought Genki Sushi in early 2006. This brought popular Japanese sushi restaurants into their family of brands. In the same year, they also brought the American restaurant chain Lawry's The Prime Rib to Hong Kong. Maxim's also partnered with Australian chef Geoff Lindsay to open "Pearl on the Peak" restaurant. This restaurant is located in the famous Peak Tower.
Maxim's also holds licenses for other popular international food chains. These include Ippudo ramen, Shake Shack burgers, and The Cheesecake Factory in different areas.
In May 2000, Maxim's teamed up with Starbucks Coffee International, Inc.. They formed a company called Coffee Concepts Ltd. This company manages Starbucks coffee shops in both Hong Kong and Macau.
In 2005, Maxim's changed the names of most of its fast food restaurants to MX.
