Maxwell (unit) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Maxwell is a unit used to measure something called magnetic flux. It's part of a system of measurement known as the centimetre-gram-second (cgs) system. This unit was first introduced by the famous mathematician and scientist Carl Friedrich Gauss.

What is Magnetic Flux?

Magnetic flux is a way to describe the total amount of a magnetic field passing through a certain area. Imagine a magnet: it creates an invisible area around it called a magnetic field. If you place a loop of wire in this field, some of the magnetic field lines will pass through the loop. Magnetic flux measures how many of these lines go through that area.

Why is Magnetic Flux Important?

Understanding magnetic flux is key to how many technologies work. It's essential for things like electric generators, which make electricity, and transformers, which change voltage levels. It also helps explain how electric motors spin. Without magnetic flux, many of the devices we use daily wouldn't exist.

The CGS System of Units

The cgs system is an older way of measuring things. It uses the centimetre for length, the gram for mass, and the second for time. While the cgs system is still used in some areas of science, most of the world now uses the International System of Units (SI). The SI system uses the metre, kilogram, and second.

Maxwell vs. Weber

In the SI system, the unit for magnetic flux is called the weber (Wb). One weber is equal to 100,000,000 (one hundred million) maxwells. So, the maxwell is a much smaller unit than the weber.

  • 1 weber = 108 maxwells
  • 1 maxwell = 10-8 webers

Who Was Carl Friedrich Gauss?

Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777–1855) was a brilliant German mathematician and scientist. He made huge contributions to many fields, including number theory, algebra, statistics, and physics. He is often called the "Prince of Mathematicians" because of his incredible discoveries. Gauss was one of the first to study magnetism in detail, which is why a unit of magnetic flux is named after him.

Who Was James Clerk Maxwell?

Even though Gauss introduced the unit, it is named after James Clerk Maxwell (1831–1879). Maxwell was a Scottish scientist who made groundbreaking discoveries in physics. He is most famous for his work on electromagnetism. He showed that electricity and magnetism are two parts of the same force and that light is an electromagnetic wave. His equations, known as Maxwell's equations, are fundamental to physics. The unit was named in his honor because of his massive contributions to understanding magnetic fields and electromagnetism.
