The black bee-eater (Merops gularis) is a cool bird that lives in the rainforests of Africa. It belongs to a group of birds called bee-eaters. You can often find these birds at the edges of the rainforest or in areas where the forest is growing back.
What Does a Black Bee-Eater Look Like?
This bird grows to be about 20 cm (8 in) long. That's about the length of a standard pencil! It's mostly black, but it has some amazing bright colors too. It has a bright red chin and throat. Its chest has streaky patterns. You might also notice a light blue stripe above its eye. Its belly and the feathers under its tail are blue. The main feathers on its wings are a reddish-brown color.

Black bee-eaters live all over the tropical rainforests in Africa. They are found in many countries across this region.
Are Black Bee-Eaters Safe?
The black bee-eater lives across a very large area. Even though we don't have an exact count of how many there are, scientists believe there are many of them. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has checked on this bird. They say its conservation status is "least concern". This means it's not currently in danger of disappearing.
