Michael Cox's Early Life
Michael Cox started playing soccer when he was young. He played for a youth team called Calgary Villains FC.
University Soccer Career
In 2015, Michael Cox went to York University. He played for their men's soccer team, the York Lions. On August 30, he scored his first goal for the team. This helped them win 3-2 against the McMaster Marauders.
Cox had an amazing October that year. On two days, he scored three goals in one game and four goals in another. These games were against the Algoma Thunderbirds. In November 2015, he was named "Athlete of the Week" many times. He received this honor from York University, OUA, and CIS.
He was the top scorer in his league, with 16 goals in 16 games. On November 12, he scored three goals in one game. This helped York win 4-1 against the Cape Breton Capers. He helped his team win the OUA West and the CIS title. He was also named the best player in the CIS Championship Tournament. At the end of the year, he was named York's Male Athlete of the Year.
Professional Club Career
Starting with FC Edmonton
In 2010, when he was just 17, Michael Cox became a professional soccer player. He joined FC Edmonton for their first exhibition season. On June 16, 2010, he scored the very first goal for FC Edmonton. This happened in a friendly game against the Montreal Impact.
On August 21, 2011, he scored his first official goals as a professional. He scored two goals in a 3-0 win against the Atlanta Silverbacks. He stayed with the club until his contract ended in 2013.
Playing in Finland
In May 2014, Cox briefly played for a Finnish team called KuFu-98. In June 2014, he signed a short contract with KuPS, another team in Finland. He played his first game for KuPS on June 10, 2014. He left the club in July 2014 when his contract finished. After that, he trained with teams in France and Portugal.
Time with Orlando City B
In January 2016, Cox joined USL team Orlando City B. In a practice game, he scored three goals in just 35 minutes. On April 9, 2016, he scored his first official goal for Orlando City B. This was in his first game for the team, against Louisville City FC. In his first season, he was the top scorer for his team with 11 goals. On August 26, 2017, he scored two goals in a 3-0 win against Louisville City. He left the club at the end of the 2017 season.
Moving to Nashville SC and Saint Louis FC
In December 2017, Cox signed with a new USL team, Nashville SC. On March 31, 2018, he scored the first goal in Nashville SC's history. He scored a penalty kick, which helped his team win 1-0 against Bethlehem Steel FC. He played in five games for Nashville SC before being traded. In July 2018, he moved to Saint Louis FC.
Playing for York9 FC
In February 2019, he signed with York9 FC in the Canadian Premier League. During the 2019 season, Michael Cox had some injuries. These injuries meant he could not play as much as he wanted to.
Recent Career
In 2024, Michael Cox signed with BTB SC. This was for the first official season of League1 Alberta. He now plays for Edmonton Scottish.
