Michel Bélanger (September 10, 1929 – December 1, 1997) was an important Canadian businessman and banker. He was known for his work in finance and for helping to shape Quebec's economy.

Who Was Michel Bélanger?

Michel Bélanger was born in Lévis, Quebec, in 1929. He grew up to become a very influential person in Canada's financial world. He was known for being smart and for his strong leadership skills.

Early Career and Key Roles

Bélanger started his career by giving advice on economic matters. He worked as an economic adviser to René Lévesque, who was a major political leader in Quebec. One of his big achievements was helping to make electricity a public service in Quebec. This meant that the government, through Hydro-Québec, took control of the electricity companies. This made sure that electricity was available to everyone.

He also made history at the Montreal Exchange, which is a place where stocks and other investments are traded. He was the first person who spoke French (a Francophone) to become the president of this important exchange.

Leading Canadian Banks

Michel Bélanger had a big impact on Canadian banking. From 1976 to 1979, he was the President of the Provincial Bank of Canada. This bank later joined with another bank, the Banque Canadienne Nationale.

When these two banks merged, they formed a new, larger bank called the National Bank of Canada. Michel Bélanger became the very first President of this new, combined bank. This was a huge role, showing how much trust people had in his abilities.

Working for Quebec's Future

Bélanger was also involved in important discussions about Quebec's future. He believed that Quebec should remain a part of Canada (this is called being a federalist). He was a co-chairman of a special group called the Commission on the Political and Constitutional Future of Quebec. This group was also known as the Belanger-Campeau Commission. They worked to find ways for Quebec to fit into Canada's future.

Awards and Recognition

For his important work and contributions to Canada, Michel Bélanger received a high honor. In 1976, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. This award recognizes people who have made a big difference in Canada. Later, in 1993, he was promoted to a Companion of the Order of Canada, which is an even higher level of this prestigious award.
