Ministry of Public Works Building, Buenos Aires facts for kids
The Ministry of Public Works Building, also known as the Ministry of Health Building, is a famous public building in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It stands tall where 9 de Julio Avenue and Belgrano Avenue meet, in the Monserrat neighborhood. This building has a simple, modern design called the rationalist style. Today, it is home to the Ministry of Health of Argentina.
You can see large steel images of María Eva Duarte de Perón, often called Evita Perón, on both the north and south sides of the building. Evita was a very important person in Argentina's history. The image on the south side shows her official portrait. The image on the north side shows her giving a powerful speech. These amazing artworks were created by an Argentinian artist named Alejandro Marmo in 2011.
Building History
This important building was constructed between 1932 and 1935. It was designed by an architect named Belgrano Alberto Blanco. When it first opened, it was the main office for the Ministry of Public Works. This is why it is still often called the Ministry of Public Works Building.
The idea for the building came from architect José Hortal. He suggested it to Manuel Alvarado, who was the Minister of Public Works at the time. Interestingly, the building was finished several years before the famous 9 de Julio Avenue was fully built around it.
Changing Ministries
In 1991, during the time Carlos Saúl Menem was president, the Ministry of Public Works was closed down. The building then became the new home for the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Social Action.
Later on, these two ministries became separate. However, the building still houses both of them today. The Ministry of Public Works was later brought back, but its new offices are in a different building called the Palace of the Treasury.
