What Does It Look Like?
The great barred frog can grow up to 8 centimeters long. That's about the length of a small smartphone! It has big, strong legs that help it jump far. Its back is dark brown, and its belly is white.
Look closely at its legs! The upper parts of its back legs are yellow with black spots. It also has black stripes running along its legs. A dark line starts at its nose, goes through its eye, and then curves down behind its ear (called the tympanum).
This frog has fully webbed feet, which are great for swimming. But its hands are not webbed at all. Its eyes are on top of its head, and you can easily see its ear drum.
Where Does It Live and What Does It Do?
The great barred frog lives on the ground in different types of forests. These include rainforests and other wet forests.
This frog is special because it can breed in both streams and ponds. Most other frogs in its group only breed in streams. The male frog makes a very loud "wark-wark-wark" sound to attract a mate. Sometimes, this is followed by a softer, slower "bwaaark-bwaaark" sound.
Reproduction
When it's time to lay eggs, the male and female great barred frog go into the water. After the female lays her eggs, she flicks them onto the bank. This keeps them safe for a while. Then, when it rains, the eggs get washed into the stream or pond. That's when they hatch into tadpoles!
You will almost always find the great barred frog near running water. Its powerful legs and webbed feet are super helpful. If a predator tries to catch it, the frog can jump a long way into the water and quickly swim away to safety.
Keeping Them as Pets
In Australia, you can keep a great barred frog as a pet. But you need to get a special permit first.
