Who Was Sayyid Hassan?
Sayyid Hassan, whose full name was Mohammed Abdullah Hassan, was born around 1864 in a place called Dhulbahante, which is now part of Somalia. He was a religious scholar and a poet. He traveled a lot, learning about different cultures and Islamic teachings. These travels helped him become a respected figure among his people.
The Rise of the Darwiish State
When Sayyid Hassan returned to Somalia, he saw that European countries were trying to take control of the region. He believed it was important for his people to remain free and govern themselves. He started a movement to unite different Somali groups. This movement grew into the Darwiish State. The word "Darwiish" refers to people who are very dedicated to their faith.
Fighting for Independence
From 1899 onwards, Sayyid Hassan and the Darwiish State fought against the British, Italian, and Ethiopian forces who wanted to control their land. The Darwiish army was known for being very brave and determined. They used clever tactics and fought many battles to protect their independence. Sayyid Hassan was often called the "Mad Mullah" by the British, but to his own people, he was a hero who stood up for their rights.
The End of the Darwiish State
The fight for independence lasted for over 20 years. In 1920, the British used new military technology, like airplanes, which the Darwiish State did not have. This made it very difficult for the Darwiish forces to continue fighting. Sayyid Hassan's movement eventually came to an end. He passed away later that same year, in December 1920. Even though the Darwiish State ended, Sayyid Hassan is still seen as a national hero in Somalia for his efforts to unite his people and fight for their freedom.
