The Mothers' and Daughters' Club House is a special old building in Plainfield, New Hampshire. It was built in 1901 and designed by a famous architect named Charles A. Platt. This building is thought to be one of the very first clubhouses made just for women in the whole country!

Today, the building is a museum run by a historical society. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This means it's recognized as an important historical site.

About the Clubhouse Building

The Mothers' and Daughters' Club House is located in the village of Plainfield. You can find it on the east side of Main Street, a short distance north of the Plainfield Town Hall.

What Does the Building Look Like?

This clubhouse is a single-story building made of wood. It has a unique roof shaped like a pyramid. There's a small woodshed attached to the back of the building. A pretty front porch with a trellis was added soon after the building was finished.

Inside, the clubhouse has one large main room. This room has many windows along its sides, letting in lots of light. At one end of the room, there's a cozy fireplace.

Who Designed and Built It?

The building was designed by Charles A. Platt, an architect from New York City. He was a summer resident in nearby Cornish. His wife was actually one of the women who helped start the club! The clubhouse was built in 1901.

What Was the Club For?

The Mothers' and Daughters' Club was part of a bigger movement at the time. This movement focused on bringing back old handicraft skills. The women in this club mostly worked on making hooked rugs.

The large room inside the clubhouse was perfect for their projects. They used it for weaving and for putting together big rugs and bedspreads. These larger items were made by sewing smaller pieces together. The money they earned from selling these beautiful handmade items helped support the club and the women who created them.
