Rivers Named Neisse
There are three rivers that share a name similar to Neisse or Nysa. Each one is a separate river with its own path and importance.
The Lusatian Neisse River
The Lusatian Neisse (called Lausitzer Neiße in German and Nysa Łużycka in Polish) is probably the most well-known of the Neisse rivers. It flows for about 252 kilometers (157 miles). This river is very important because it forms a large part of the border between Germany and Poland. Imagine a natural line drawn by a river, separating two countries! It starts in the Czech Republic, then flows north, becoming the border river, and finally joins another big river called the Oder.
The Glatzer Neisse River
The Glatzer Neisse (called Glatzer Neiße in German and Nysa Kłodzka in Polish) is another river with a similar name. This river is entirely located within Poland. It flows for about 195 kilometers (121 miles). It starts in the Sudetes mountains and flows through a region known as Silesia before joining the Oder River, just like the Lusatian Neisse.
The Wütende Neiße River
The Wütende Neiße (which means "Raging Neisse" in German) is a much smaller river compared to the other two. It is located in Germany, in the state of Saxony. It's a tributary of the Zschopau River.
The City of Nysa
Besides the rivers, there is also a city named Nysa in Poland. This city is located in the Opole Voivodeship (a type of province) in southwestern Poland. It's an old city with a long history, and it's situated on the banks of the Glatzer Neisse River.
