Nelly Maria Thüring (born June 21, 1875, in Vankiva, Sweden – died January 2, 1972, in Enskede, Sweden) was a Swedish photographer and a Social Democrat politician. She made history as one of the first five women ever elected to the Swedish parliament in 1921. This was a huge step for women's rights in Sweden!

Early Life and Photography Career

Nelly Thüring was born in Vankiva, Sweden. Her parents were Nils Nilsson and Pernilla Persdotter, who were farmers. She started working as a shop clerk when she was just 15 years old, from 1890 to 1896.

After that, Nelly found her passion in photography. She became a professional photographer in 1896. In 1900, she opened her very own photo studio in the city of Lund. She was a photographer until 1933.

In 1903, she married Johan Göransson, an editor. They later divorced in 1917. Nelly started using the name Thüring when she became known for her photography work.

A Pioneer in Politics

Nelly Thüring decided to focus on politics. In 1920, she sold her photography studio to dedicate all her time to her new career. She had already started her political journey earlier.

From 1917 to 1920, she was a member of the city council in Gothenburg. This was an important step before she moved to national politics.

Breaking Barriers: Entering Parliament

The year 1921 was a landmark year for women in Sweden. For the first time, women were allowed to vote and be elected to the national parliament. Nelly Thüring was one of the amazing women who made history that year.

She was elected to the lower chamber of the Swedish Parliament. Four other women were also elected alongside her:

  • Agda Östlund (also a Social Democrat)
  • Bertha Wellin (Conservative party)
  • Elisabeth Tamm (Liberal party)
  • Kerstin Hesselgren (elected to the upper chamber)

These five women were true pioneers, opening doors for many more women in politics.

Nelly Thüring's Work as an MP

As a Member of Parliament (MP), Nelly Thüring worked on several important issues. She was very interested in international cooperation, which means countries working together. She also cared about the working conditions for women who worked in prisons.

She often teamed up with the other female MPs. Together, they pushed for changes in schools, wanting them to be open to everyone, no matter their religion. They also worked on improving care for children and mothers.

Nelly was known for being sharp and witty during debates in parliament. She wasn't afraid to speak her mind. For example, when there was a suggestion to mark voting bills by gender, she famously said that if that happened, she would start a women's political party!

Leaving Parliament and Continued Activism

Nelly Thüring chose to leave her seat in parliament in 1928. She found the work in parliament to be slow and sometimes boring. She preferred to be an "agitator." This means she liked to be a political activist. She would travel, give speeches, and work through political groups to spread her ideas and encourage people to get involved.

Even after leaving parliament, she remained active in politics. She was a member of the main committee for Social Democratic Women from 1924 to 1928. She also led the Enskede Social Democratic Women's Club from 1926 to 1928.

Nelly Thüring passed away on January 2, 1972, in Stockholm, Sweden. She left behind a legacy as a groundbreaking photographer and a fearless politician who helped pave the way for women in Sweden.
