Exploring Nueva Granada's Past
Nueva Granada means "New Grenade." It was first started in 1854. The area of Nueva Granada grew to include a place called Nuevo Carrizal, which means "New Reedbed."
How Nueva Granada Became a Town
In the early 1900s, Nueva Granada asked the government of El Salvador to officially recognize it as a town. The government agreed!
On May 15, 1907, a special law was passed. This law turned a small village called El Carrizal into the town of Nueva Granada. It was separated from the area of El Triunfo. President Fernando Figueroa approved this law the very next day.
A few months later, on August 26, 1907, another law set the exact borders for the new town. It also said that the people of El Triunfo should choose a mayor and other leaders for Nueva Granada. This happened on the first Sunday of September that year.
Nueva Granada officially received the title of "town" on August 25, 1955.
Growing the Town's Area
In 1916, two farms, Gualcho and Jocomontique, became part of the Nueva Granada municipality. This helped the town grow even more.
