A Look at O'Bannon's Past
Every place has a story, and O'Bannon is no different! Its history tells us how it got its name and what important places used to be there.
How the Name Changed
Did you know O'Bannon wasn't always called O'Bannon? When it first started, it was known as Williamson. This name came from John Williamson, who was the very first postmaster in the area. A postmaster is the person in charge of a local post office.
But in 1859, the name changed to O'Bannon. This new name honored another postmaster, John O'Bannon. So, the neighborhood was named after two different people who helped with mail services long ago!
Old Buildings and Schools
The old Post Office, where people would send and receive letters, was located at the corner of Old LaGrange Road and Collins Lane.
There was also a school called O'Bannon Elementary School. It was on Factory Lane and helped educate many children in the neighborhood. However, this school closed its doors in 1960.
