History of the Odd Fellows' Home

Where the Home is Located

The Odd Fellows' Home is in the northeastern part of Worcester. It is near a major highway, Interstate 190. You can find it at the corner of Barber and Randolph Streets.

How the Land Was Donated

The land for the home was a gift from a kind man named Thomas Dodge. He was a well-known lawyer in the area. In 1890, he donated the land. He wanted to make sure the residents had lots of space. He gave about 24 acres (9.7 hectares) in total. This ensured "ample light and air" for everyone living there.

The Original Building's Design

The first main building was a large brick structure. It had three stories and was built between 1890 and 1892. The architects who designed it were Barker & Nourse. A very noticeable part of the building was a tall tower. It had a special roof called a mansard roof. This tower was about 5 and a half stories high.

The front of the building had brick columns. A porch also stretched across part of the front. In 1902, a new section was added to the right side. This addition was a 2 and a half story brick building. It helped the home have space for up to 110 people. This part of the building had a classic look with stone details. It also had a fancy entrance porch with round columns.

Changes to the Old Facility

The original building was sold in 2012. A company bought it to develop the area. In 2014, the old building was taken down. This was done to make more room for the nearby Dodge Park Rest Home. Some parts of the old building were saved. They were used in other construction projects.
