Ouémé is one of the twelve departments in the country of Benin. A department is like a large region or state. It is located in the southern part of Benin, a country in West Africa.
The capital city of Ouémé is Porto-Novo. This city is also the official capital of Benin.
History of Ouémé
In 1999, the northern part of the Ouémé department was separated. This new area became its own department. It is now known as the Plateau Department. This change made the Ouémé department a bit smaller.
Communes of Ouémé
The Ouémé department is divided into smaller areas. These smaller areas are called "communes." Think of them like towns or districts within the department. There are nine communes in Ouémé:
- Adjarra
- Adjohoun
- Aguégués
- Akpro-Missérété
- Avrankou
- Bonou
- Dangbo
- Porto Novo
- Sèmè-Kpodji
